Midnight Goema is a live celebration of this sound mixed with Samba and related sounds, performed by Akkel.

Akkel is a concept organically engendered from Cape Town's margins that questions how we understand intelligence, creativity, and collective action. Extrapolated from Arabic philosophical traditions where aql means intellect, the vernacular akeltjie describes innovative, artful improvisation, the creative intelligence that emerges when people make something beautiful, functional, or transformative from limited resources and constrained circumstances.

But this isn't just individual cleverness. In Cape Town's precariat communities, Akkel represents a form of relational intelligence that interweaves:
- Care for one's community and environment
- Courage to imagine and create alternatives
- Communitas that grounds individual creativity in collective flourishing

As a musicking ensemble we honor and re-member (reenact and celebrate the stories erased by dominant anti poor narratives) the Subaltern Goema traditions and values of joyful justice based solidarity, care, audacity and geniality.
