Article: Why We Always Ask, "How Old Is Your Candle?"

Why We Always Ask, "How Old Is Your Candle?"

Why We Always Ask, "How Old Is Your Candle?"

Every now and then we receive a phone call or an email that begins something like this:

"I lit my SoyLites candle, but it burned terribly."

Or,

"The flame was tiny."

"The wax wouldn't melt properly."

"It doesn't smell like I remember."

We almost always know what to ask next.

"How old is the candle?"

Or perhaps,

"Do you remember when you bought it?"

It's usually not the answer people expect.

We're not asking because we're trying to avoid the problem. We're asking because, after nearly two decades of making natural soy candles, we've learnt that this one question often tells us everything we need to know.

Most people are surprised to discover that natural soy candles have a shelf life. In reality, a SoyLites candle has an expected shelf life of around two to three years.

In fact, the very thing that makes SoyLites different is often the reason an older candle no longer performs the way it once did.

Unlike conventional candles made with paraffin wax and synthetic additives, or products marketed as "natural" that are actually blended with synthetic ingredients, SoyLites are crafted from pure soy wax and botanical oils. Those ingredients are wonderfully natural, but they don't last forever. Over time the oils slowly begin to change. The fragrance softens, the wax structure alters, and eventually the candle no longer burns as beautifully as it was designed to.

That isn't a defect. It's evidence that the ingredients are real.

We've become so accustomed to products lasting indefinitely that we've forgotten what happens when something comes directly from nature instead of chemistry.

All good things from nature have a shelf life.

Fresh bread goes stale.

Olive oil eventually loses its freshness.

Natural skincare has an expiry date.

And natural soy candles are no different.

That's why we always encourage our customers not to save their favourite candle for one special occasion.

I remember someone once telling me,

"I received a SoyLites candle as a gift. I absolutely love it."

"Did you enjoy burning it?" I asked.

"Oh no," she replied. "I haven't lit it yet."

Imagine how much more she would have loved it if she had.

Light it. Enjoy it.

Let it fill your home with fragrance and ambience. Let it accompany a long bath, a quiet evening with a book, or dinner with friends. Let it become part of the ordinary moments that so often become the memorable ones.

The beautiful irony is that the candles people treasure most are often the ones they never burn, waiting for the perfect moment.

But natural things aren't made to wait forever.

They're made to be enjoyed while they're at their very best.

So the next time you unwrap a SoyLites candle, don't save it for someday.

Light it today.

Nature made it that way.
